Burque Unite: Community Healing Through Art and Expression

Gerald Lovato

“I am a social practice artist interested in researching behavioral health in my interdisciplinary practice. My goal is to find new ways to use artistic intervention and the theory of artivism as a continuation of what first began in the Chicana Feminist Movement as a social praxis. My approach to this work is an opportunity and invitation for catharsis, both for me and the viewer.”

Burque Unite

The community event performed by Gerald took place at The Albuquerque Orpheum Community Hub.

“The community really pulled together to help me pull off this event, which exemplified the community concept of the show. I believe the most powerful piece in this exhibition was the Fight for Change performance piece which a lot of people missed. It was a “had to be there” kind of performance. I was told it was powerful and I have hopes that when the documentation of this event is released, it will have an echoing effect with an impact lingering on.”

Explained Gerald Lovato.

Art + Activism = “Artivism“

The result will be a documentrary style film focusing on Gerald’s “training”, a physical and mental journey of preperation for his performance . We helped the film crew of several talented filmmakers create A-Roll, B-Roll, BTS, stills, graphics, and got our hands on a little bit of everything to capture this journey.

Lasting Impact

Through this project, we hoped to create a deeper understanding and appreciation for the artistic journey experience. We want to inspire others to see the beauty and potential in all people. We believe that art has the power to bring people together, to bridge divides, and to create a sense of community and belonging - and this project was our way of contributing to that vision.
