“Dignity Not Detention” Documentary

In collaboration with The Dignity Not Detention Coalition we created a documentary film piece for Immigrant Law Legislation.

Dignity Not Detention Coalition

As an art collective ourselves, we are always drawn to the power of storytelling, and the ways in which art can connect us to different experiences and perspectives. The wonderful and passionate people from NMILC, NM DreamTeam, Innovation Law Lab, and other organizations involved, focus on sharing the stories of immigrant youth, who often face unique challenges and barriers as they navigate their new homes and communities.

Dignity Not Detention Short Documentary

In a world often shrouded in darkness, it's crucial to shed light on injustices that too often remain hidden from view. At Momentos, we believe in capturing and sharing the pivotal moments that define our communities. Our latest documentary “Dignity Not Detention“ delves deep into the heart of the matter, exposing the inhumane living conditions endured by refugees within ICE detention centers in New Mexico. We embarked on a journey, meeting with refugees and sharing their stories — tales of individuals unjustly detained and the families they leave behind, all deeply impacted by these circumstances.

Our film premiered on the Legislative Session’s Day of Action Jan 18th, 2024 in the Santa Fe State Capitol. Over 100 supporters attended the premiere, rallying with us to make our message to the state Senators, Representatives, and everyone in the Roundhouse loud and clear; ”Everyone deserves dignity, not detention”.

For more information about the details please read our interviews with The Santa Fe Reporter and The Albuquerque Journal. We want to send a big thank you to The Center for Cultural Power and all those who have helped spread the word for this piece along the way.

Art + Activism = “Artivism“

Art has a unique ability to transcend language barriers and connect with audiences on an emotional level, making it an invaluable tool for conveying the gravity of topics like the inhumane living conditions within ICE detention centers. By weaving together visuals, sound, and narrative, we are able to create a compelling story that resonates deeply with viewers, fostering understanding and empathy where words alone may fall short. Through our documentary, we leverage the power of storytelling to not only shed light on the injustices faced by refugees but also to inspire action and ignite meaningful change.

Call to Action

But our documentary is more than just a catalog of injustices—it's a call to action. As members of our community, we have a responsibility to speak out against systemic oppression and advocate for change. Already, our film has sparked conversations and galvanized individuals and organizations to take a stand against these atrocities.

We urge you to join us in this fight for justice. Whether it's signing petitions, volunteering your time, or simply raising awareness, every action counts. Together, we can work towards a future where no one is subjected to such deplorable conditions in the name of immigration enforcement.

As we continue to shine a light on the darkest corners of society, we remain committed to our mission of amplifying the voices of those who have been silenced for too long. Join us as we strive to create a more just and compassionate world for all.

Lasting Impact

Through this project, we hoped to create a deeper understanding and appreciation for the immigrant experience, and to inspire others to see the beauty and potential in all people, regardless of their background or origin. We believe that art has the power to bring people together, to bridge divisions, and to create a sense of community and belonging - and this project was our way of contributing to that vision.
